In today’s fast-paced and often chaotic world, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed. We’re constantly bombarded with information and distractions, and it can be difficult to find peace and contentment amidst the chaos. But what if we could turn to an ancient philosophy to help us navigate the challenges of modern life?
Stoicism is an ancient Greek philosophy that has been making a comeback in recent years. Founded in the 3rd century BCE by Zeno of Citium, Stoicism teaches that the path to happiness is found in accepting the present moment as it is and focusing on what we can control. By practicing mindfulness and self-control, we can learn to let go of our worries and find peace in the present moment.
The dichotomy of control
One of the key teachings of Stoicism is the idea of “the dichotomy of control.” This means that there are some things in life that we can control, and others that we cannot. For example, we can control our own thoughts and actions, but we cannot control external events or other people’s behavior. By focusing on what we can control and letting go of what we cannot, we can reduce our stress and anxiety.

Another important aspect of Stoicism is the practice of mindfulness. This means being fully present in the moment and paying attention to our thoughts and feelings without judgment. By practicing mindfulness, we can become more aware of our own thoughts and emotions, and learn to respond to them in a calm and rational manner.
Stoicism also emphasizes the importance of living a virtuous life. This means living in accordance with our values and striving to be the best version of ourselves. By practicing virtues such as courage, wisdom, justice, and self-control, we can improve our character and live a more fulfilling life.
The follow the timeless wisdom of the ancient Stoics with these powerful quotes from renowned philosophers. Let their insights guide and inspire you on your journey.:
"Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one." - Marcus Aurelius
"If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment." - Marcus Aurelius
"It is the power of the mind to be unconquerable." - Seneca
"Complaining does not work as a strategy. We all have finite time and energy. Any time we spend whining is unlikely to help us achieve our goals. And it won't make us happier." - Randy Pausch
"Until we have begun to go without them, we fail to realize how unnecessary many things are. We've been using them not because we needed them but because we had them." - Seneca
Final Thoughts
Some ancient philosophies that have so much to offer us in modern times. Indeed, Stoicism is not the only ancient philosophy that has relevance for us today. In my next installment, I’ll be exploring the parallels between modern Stoicism and secular Buddhism. Like Stoicism, Buddhism emphasizes mindfulness and self-awareness as a path to happiness and fulfillment. Both philosophies also share a focus on ethical living and the cultivation of virtues such as compassion and wisdom.
While there are certainly differences between these two philosophies, their commonalities suggest that there is much we can learn from both. By drawing on the insights of both Stoicism and Buddhism, we can develop a richer and more nuanced understanding of how to live a fulfilling and meaningful life in the modern world.
